Going to DM this system for the first time... Help
on: October 2, 2013, 12:28

Hello all. I am my Monday night groups resident DM and I have been informed that they would like to play in this wonderful setting. I have plenty of time in as a DM but never DM'd a "living" type setting with Certs before. What would the best way to start be…? Do I as the DM need to send anything in ahead of time before we start? I have the campaign setting info and understand how characters are to be built. In looking it over it seems like you need to have preapproval to play certain races and or classes is that generally just a hand waved thing or is it difficult to get? In reading over the campaign info it seems to assume that you would be starting at a Con with a setting experienced DM running and smoothing over the starting hassle. I am just trying to get a little more info so that I can help my players get ready to start. Please help, and thank you all for your time.

You can email in for the certs. The email address is around here somewhere……..or you can just email the address on the front page. Certs are good to have on hand. As for the other races/classes. I don't know many who actually get approved for them, so I wouldn't count to hard on getting those approved.

Anyways, welcome to the system. I'm Ryan, I play and GM at Cons so if you have any questions I'll help the best I can.

I love this game. I have/had/will have/hope to get back a 145h level Halfling Ranger, a 13th level Druid, Horizon Walker, Nature Warden, a 5th level Bard, and a 9th level Paladin of Lohm, and a 3rd level Cleric of Ardra.

Well the question of getting unique Race/Class certs is usually reserved (as far as I understand it) for those who contribute/volunteer with Convention GMing, writing mods, and a wide variety of other opportunities. Between the Core Pathfinder book, what is allowed from the Advanced Player's Guide, and the LSJ Campaign Guide, there is a wide variety of races/classes open to players. All current races found in the Pathfinder Core rules and the LSJ guide are open, and the few classes that require permission are for the Noble/Aristocrat classes which are unique to LSJ.

You can start anytime as a GM running the system, you can find the Mods located in Modules tab above (as well as the contact email to get certs). When you want to play a mod, email the campaign staff for certs as well as filling out the Roster of Heroes and Event Summaries found within each mod (this is the paperwork to help the campaign staff know "who has done what, where"). Also remember that if you are "eating a mod" (GMing it for the first time without actually playing the mod), you can earn experience and either a single magic item or the earned gold from that adventure to put onto a character you own. This means you will need to create a character which you can then later use at a convention if you'd like.

The most important thing, in my opinion, is to make sure that each player fills out and keeps what is known as their "log sheets". These sheets (filled out in pen) are you most useful tools in recording what the PCs have completed, with experience and gold earned. Depending on where you live, there is a possibility of an experienced LSJ player or judge living nearby who could help you out on your first adventure if you ask.

Anyways, the number one goal is to have fun, and welcome to LSJ. If you need any help, feel free to ask.

The lanista Andoen is from a long line of warlords hailing from the Northern Wastes, a rugged land of violence where only the strongest survive. Kidnapped from his homeland as a child, the barbarian was a slave-warrior until his escape into the Sea of Fire. Living for a while with the tribesmen of the desert, he left them and traveled to the Shining Jewel. Making his home in this strange city, Andoen’s legend has grown through numerous adventures.
Andoen is the guild master of the Company of the Black Wolves, an adventuring guild gaining recognition throughout the city for their exploits.

To my knowledge, only the dark elf is restricted as races in the book go. Most of the people that play restricted things have done work for the campaign, but I don't know if all have. You can alwys send a request for them, worst will happen is you are told no. In doing so it is also helpful to write up the idea and character to send with the request, this won't guarantee approval, but a well thought out concept/story with details certainly won't hurt your chances.

Make sure as Andoen said to use pen on your log sheets, as well as certs, once you start playing, the characters name cannot be changed…ever. so make sure you are happy with it when you start. I find it is wise to only write the first name on the sheet/logs/certs to save writing it out everytime, I often write a full name on the back of a character sheet.

Welcome to a great setting and enjoy.

Thank you all for the quick response. Am i supposed to request Certs before the game so they can be handed out at the end of the Mod or do I need to wait until the Mod is finished before they are requested? Also I was a bit confused on how getting treasure works. Can each person get the magic items in a Mod or are they only available in the number listed. Aka if it lists a Cure Light Wounds potion, is that avail per character or is it just one for the group. Also I was not understanding if there is a wealth limit per level or not?

Depends on if you want to hand them out right away or not, but I would recommend doing so, yes.

And no, not everyone gets everything, you do have to decide what you want, how you do that is up to you/your players. Some certs everyone gets, normally gratitude/enmity, favor/disfavors, sometimes everyone gets a choice of something, sometimes everyone might get some things the same, like potions, but have other loot to choose from. It is usually pretty easy to tell since if everyone gets one, there are multiple copies of the cert, if there is only one of the item, only one person gets it.

There is a wealth cap per level, per item. Example: A 6th level character can not have an item valued over 16,000 GP. Also you can not buy anything over a +2 with out a Mystical Marketplace, which can only be done by certified campaign staff at a convention. Even buying a +2 you have to use the Bazaar and log it on your log sheet as well as the acquisition sheet. All of this can be found in the LSJ Guide. The Gold caps are on page 165.

From what I have been told if there is somehow an item obtained in a mod outside of the cap for your level you can have and use it. Not sure how many times that has been possible but it has come up.

Thank you all for the advice! As a relative newcomer to Pathfinder and to roleplaying in general, I signed up for an LSJ event at GenCon (Hair of the Dog) this year on a whim and l loved it so much that I came back and played another module (Hounds Abound) later in the weekend. I am anxious to introduce this campaign to my gaming group, and am looking forward to playing again at GenCon 2015, maybe bringing a few friends with me. Any other advice not previously addressed on getting a group started would be greatly appreciated.

Glad you had a good time at Gencon and hope to see you again. Also of note, if you are from in or around indiana, we also have a face to face weekend for Weekend in the Shining Jewel in Anderson In in the beginning of November as well as on line. You and your players are also encouraged to make accounts here and join in on the Dauntless Dolphin thread, we can always use more people in it.

Thanks! Alcarion has just wandered into the Dauntless Dolphin. Any information on the event in November would be appreciated. As I'm from Indy, Anderson is not a long trip for me at all.
